Head Start Program*
Head Start is a federally funded program that provides
comprehensive child development services to economically
disadvantaged children, aged three to five and their families.
Head Start programs promote school readiness by enhancing the social
and cognitive development of children through the provision of
educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to
enrolled children and families.
Head Start programs also emphasize the involvement of parents.
Most children who enroll in Head Start programs attend a half day
center based program. However some communities my offer a full
day program or provide Head Start services through a home based
setting.
Professional positions in a Head Start program might include
teaching aides or assistants, lead teachers or directors. In
addition, some communities offer Early Head Start services for
children aged birth to three.
Teacher Assistant
- Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
Teacher
- Associates degree in early childhood education or other
related field.
Education Coordinator
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in early childhood education
or other related field.
