Head Start Program*

Head Start is a federally funded program that provides comprehensive child development services to economically disadvantaged children, aged three to five and their families.  Head Start programs promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families.

Head Start programs also emphasize the involvement of parents.  Most children who enroll in Head Start programs attend a half day center based program.  However some communities my offer a full day program or provide Head Start services through a home based setting.

Professional positions in a Head Start program might include teaching aides or assistants, lead teachers or directors.  In addition, some communities offer Early Head Start services for children aged birth to three.
